New Form of Torture: Cat Washing Machine

You've probably seen the video on YouTube or CNN of the cat washing machine. A title card says, "Kitty spa at pet supplies store."

The machine looks like a front-loading washer. You put the cat in the front door, set the temperature and hit the start button. Water shoots from the bottom of the grated floor and from the ceiling. You can see the tabby is apprehensive after being put in and then that changes to sheer terror as it leaps straight up, paws extended, desperate to find a way out.

It is frightening. It is frightening to watch, and you can only imagine what the cat is thinking. It is clear the cat wants out -- it scratches at the door, jumps and jumps and jumps, and just looks terrorized. It's so awful that I couldn't watch the whole thing and I won't embed it here.

To me, it looked like pure torture. And, yes, washing a cat is never easy, but this cannot and should not be the way to go.

The intention with which it was made is not wrong... But if, in the process, it trepedites and petrifies the cat...then it is nothing less than a torture.

I have had cats for the past 34 years and only once did I have to "wash" one of them. He had gotten into the garage and had some grease on his fur from under the car. I called the veterinarian and he told me to use a little Dawn dish liquid to remove the grease. Cats usually keep themselves clean and do not need to be bathed. If your cat does need to be bathed and you can't handle it (they usually put up a fight), take the animal to a groomer. A good groomer is properly trained to bathe the animal with as little stress to your pet as possible.

I agree with Joanne...I NEVER bathe my cats, and everyone who comes to our place remarks at how clean they are and how soft and shiny their fur is. That's because we feed them high-quality food. A cat that sheds a lot and has dander or dull, oily fur is probably on a poor quality food with lots of fillers. "You are what you eat" is especially true for pets. Wellness is the brand we use, but any brand with real meat (not grains, fats or meat by-products) as the first two or three ingredients is your best choice.
